Flickr has thousands of good wallpaper and its safe to download from there. When I tried to download wallpapers by googling I ended up in downloading spyware and viruses. So the above links are the safe way to get good wallpapers and decorate our desktop!

Wannabe Ultra Geek !!

I have been exploring and experimenting with Linux for a while now. When I started as a newbie I was looking for the best distro which suited all my needs. I tried out at least 20 distros before deciding my favorite one's. I don't think one distro can solve all my needs. So depending on the situation I use one of the following distros. The distros which I personally liked are:

• Knoppix
• OpenSuse
• Slax
• LFS

Each distro has some unique strength over others. For example,

• Knoppix comes with a rich set of softwares(7 GB!) and out of the box hardware support. This contains almost all softwares which I need from a Linux distro.
• As a long time windows(7+ years) user I felt comfortable with OpenSuse. In my opinion this is the best distro for windows users. I use OpenSuse 10.3 at home.
  
• Slax is a small and flexible distro. Flexible meaning, I can quickly assemble my own distro without knowing any internals of this distro. With MySlax creator I was able to choose the modules and assemble my own distro in no time.
  
• Linux From Scratch(LFS) is not exactly a distro, but I would like to call it a distro. This is for Ultra geeks who want to build their own distro from scratch.

I am not Anti-Windows and having used windows for over 7 years, I should admit that I am really bored of Windows OS. Even though Linux is being widely used by non-geek users, I personally believe that Linux is for geeks. The reason why Linux is for geeks is: We can explore the internals of the OS and experiment with it, which makes Linux more interesting.


Linux from scratch is for ultra geeks who want to build their own distro from source code. In the beginning, It requires many days to build a complete distro(i.e. LFS + BLFS) and it is very challenging to build from source. Even geek's find it very challenging and thats why I called LFS as a distro for Ultra geeks.

With every challenge lies an opportunity, and LFS is not an exception. Even though building LFS from source is challenging for a geek, the opportunity to learn the internals of the OS and building our own distro is rewarding. I am really excited about LFS and planning to build Linux from source. Let me get my hands dirty with LFS and let you know when I become Ultra geek!

3d Desktop!

Its amazing to see the 3D desktop! In my opinion its going to be the next generation desktop. 3D desktop is available in next version of Windows Vista. Microsoft uses its own DWM to provide 3D desktop in Vista.And its already availabe in Linux. In linux XGL is used to provide the 3D desktop. The above shown video uses XGL in Linux. According to me, I dont see a necessity of 3D desktop today, but i strongly believe that its going to be a desktop of the furure due to its rich user experience!

Linus Torvalds Usenet post for releasing Linux!

Many of you might know that Linux Torvalds used the comp.os.minix usenet group to release his Linux operating system.For couple of days I was searching for his post which announced the birth of Linux. Why not try Linux?

One fine day I had this question in my mind.... Why not try Linux??? I have been using Windows Since 2000 and I really got bored. So I thought Linux is worth a try.

Being a newbie to linux there were many surprises for me. One of them is the Live CD. Live CD was pretty new to me (May be for you too!). And explored further and found many live distros. Some of them are Damn Small Linux, SLAX, Puppy Linux, Ubuntu etc. Also I was exploring other unix like systems BSD(DragonFlyBSD) and Solaris. Belenix, It is the Live distro based on OpenSolaries created by an indian(In SunMicrosystems, Bangalore). So i couldnt resist myself from trying it out. Out of the all the live distros i liked SLAX due to its good look and feel(Yes, I didnt learn much of the linux yet, but started learning).

What is Live Distro?
If you are wondering what a live distro is then here is what you want. Live Distro is a OS which runs directly from CD! You need not install any of the above OS. Instead put the OS CD and boot directly from the CD!! I always had a hard time installing linux in my windows machine. I always screwed up my windows when i tried to install linux! So if you know the trick please let me know... Still I find it difficult. Surprising thing for me is most of these disros, after booting they can run directly from RAM!!!!

Its not just these Live Distros surprised me. I found that Linux can be run inside Windows using some Virtualisation softwares like VMWare! And also some Linux emulators are available. Some of the popular Linux emulators are Boscs and qemu.

If you want to learn Linux then I highly recommend one of the above mentioned live distros. Most of them can even boot from a Pen Drive(Lessthan 128 MB)!. So download it and start learning.
