My Experience with VirtualBox

Before a year I first encountered Virtualbox, It was easy to setup and use. Before virtual box I have tried Qemu and VMware. I started loving virtual box, from then on it became my favorite Virtualization software. Last week I was build Linux from source (LFS) in Virtualbox, It went well in the beginning.

When I was building Linux from source I stored at-least 15 snapshots to restore if something went wrong and It took me two days of continuous building to reach a point where I am close to finish. I took a break after saving snapshot. To my surprise I could not restore from the snapshot. I lost two days of work due to a bug in Virtualbox 3. Do not rely on snapshots stored in Virtualbox 3, it is bugggy!!
Now I have to start over and build my linux from scratch.

I have used Dropbox over a year and its a really good product. If you want a similar service within your network you can do it with GIT and rsync in Linux. Following article is an interesting read and I will try it at my home network!!

I have been exploring and experimenting with Linux for a while now. When I started as a newbie I was looking for the best distro which suited all my needs. I tried out at least 20 distros before deciding my favorite one's. I don't think one distro can solve all my needs. So depending on the situation I use one of the following distros. The distros which I personally liked are:

Each distro has some unique strength over others. For example,

Knoppix comes with a rich set of softwares(7 GB!) and out of the box hardware support. This contains almost all softwares which I need from a Linux distro.
As a long time windows(7+ years) user I felt comfortable with OpenSuse. In my opinion this is the best distro for windows users. I use OpenSuse 10.3 at home.
Slax is a small and flexible distro. Flexible meaning, I can quickly assemble my own distro without knowing any internals of this distro. With MySlax creator I was able to choose the modules and assemble my own distro in no time.
Linux From Scratch(LFS) is not exactly a distro, but I would like to call it a distro. This is for Ultra geeks who want to build their own distro from scratch.

I am not Anti-Windows and having used windows for over 7 years, I should admit that I am really bored of Windows OS. Even though Linux is being widely used by non-geek users, I personally believe that Linux is for geeks. The reason why Linux is for geeks is: We can explore the internals of the OS and experiment with it, which makes Linux more interesting.

Linux from scratch is for ultra geeks who want to build their own distro from source code. In the beginning, It requires many days to build a complete distro(i.e. LFS + BLFS) and it is very challenging to build from source. Even geek's find it very challenging and thats why I called LFS as a distro for Ultra geeks.

With every challenge lies an opportunity, and LFS is not an exception. Even though building LFS from source is challenging for a geek, the opportunity to learn the internals of the OS and building our own distro is rewarding. I am really excited about LFS and planning to build Linux from source. Let me get my hands dirty with LFS and let you know when I become Ultra geek!

I passed SCWCD 1.4 with 97% yesterday! When I went to the prometric center the server was down, I waited for few hours to take the exam. Luckily the server was up again, otherwise I should have taken the exam some other day. I did not aim for a high score, Instead I foucsed on learning the fundamentals properly which led to a high score.

I recently tried Adobe Digital Editions and started loving it. It is more like viewing a pdf file in acrobat reader. It is actually a ebook reader and the features included in Adobe digital editions are highly suitable for avid reader like me. The features include bookmarking, creating a library of ebooks with book shelf(It is like folders). It requires flash installed in your machine. Try it out you might like it if you need a light weight application.

Its always good to know who we are and what are our weakness and strength for our goal.

I am a Software Engineer with about two years of experience. I have used Java in most part of my work so far. As you might know by now, I completed SCJP 5.0 last week with 81%. My real aim is SCJD so I am not very keen on the SCJP score.

After doing good amount of research I found that I need to be strong in the following areas:

Swing and good user interface design
Object oriented analysis and design(OOAD)
RMI and socket programming
Multi threading
IO
Design patterns
Javadoc, coding conventions and maintanability of code
Others: Ant, Junit for building and testing the app

In the above, the only strength I have is multi threading. I am planning to learn all the others pretty soon. I really want to get the basics right in all the above areas within one month(30-June-07) from today. I did not do any estimate, Its just did a blind target as I am new to areas like RMI, Swing and design patterns. I will have a real target as I get into learning all the stuffs listed above when I start getting the grip of it.

I got Head first OOAD and Java Design patters book to begin with. Started learning....

Sharing SCJD

I have just started to prepare for SCJD. So I thought it would be better If I share my explorations with everyone in this blog. I will share my plans, explorations and my progress in this blog. I think it will be very useful for both me and others.

From my side I will be logging my plans, explorations and progress here. It is an opportunity for me to help others who are preparing for SCJD and to stay committed myself. Otherwise I might float it and fail to achieve it within the target date. More I write about it, more I get involved and above all I will have the satisfaction of helping others, which is worth more than just earning the certification myself!

I always wanted to know how people prepared for the certification and their experience. So I read a lot about the experiences in the forums like Javaranch. But the disadvantage with forum post was, I can only read the experience in the end and not real time. And also whatever I read was just a summary. It doesn't give a clear picture how others have overcome the obstacles. So If I share my experience real time with others, it is an opportunity for others who are preparing for SCJD. My experience will be useful for others irrespective of my result in SCJD. Whether I pass or not, it doesn't matter. If I pass everyone will benefit from the path I have taken. If I fail everyone(Including me) will know why I failed and learn from the experience. I see a lot of benefits like this. So I am sure its worth sharing!!

I am aware that I am not supposed to reveal any details of the assignment. So I will not give out any details about the assignment which is illegal(And against my will). Instead I will log my experience real time. For the sake of convenience I will tag all my SCJD related experience with the tag "SCJDShare". So In future anyone can just filter the posts and read it. So I am starting today the first post with "SCJDShare". Also I will be bookmarking my links in delicious with the tag "SCJD". Long way to go... Lets do it!!!

At last I have completed my SCJP 5.0 last week. I got the voucher one year before and after a long time I completed the exam successfully. In my opinion SCJP is not that tough. Because it did not involve many tricky questions unlike the simulators. The real SCJP questions are more direct and evaluates your understanding of Java. If you are well versed with Java then SCJP should be a cake walk. Whatever I read from forums like Javaranch are a hype.

I started preparing for SCJD exam. It is my next goal and I target May, 2008 to complete it. I got to learn many things for this exam. So far I am enjoying it, and I hope I complete it well before the target date. I am shooting for December, 2007 if all goes well.

Yahoo Photos to be discontinued!

According to Techcrunch Yahoo Photos will be discontinued soon in favour of Flickr. I am a fan of Yahoo Photos and user for more than 6 years. I wish Flicr is shut in favour of Yahoo photos since the number of Yahoo users photos are more than Flickr. Yahoo photos is the leader in online photo site as per the data from Techcrunch:

Flickr ---> 28.5 Million unique visitors

It was obvious that the online messenger usage had increased drastically in the recent past and it is likely to grow. The interface is very cool and stores the chat history!

AOL launched its web site for India. It is following the suit after Google, Yahoo and MSN. It provides email, messenger services with "@aol.in" address. The other services provided are news, sports, local search and videos.

Today I was one of the poor fellows who got infected by W32.Imaut.A
worm. I recieved a link from one of my friend in Yahoo messenger and
innocently i clicked the link. Thats it, my IE got affected and
Registry editor was disabled! And the virus sent the link to all my
friends list before my eyes! I couldnt even stop it. Iam slowly
recovering from the virus, hope the following link helps you if you get
infected by the same virus and it was helpful for me,

Fortunately this virus doesnot do a fatal damage. But unfortunately if
you are in Yahoo messenger list of infected person,then you are bound
to recieve the virus link. Dont click that suspicious link, If you
click then you are dead! Beware!

PS: I posted this message in couple of groups and forums. So dont think im copying and posting it everywhere. The intention is to spread the world about my bad experience so that others can be cautious.

3d Desktop!

Its amazing to see the 3D desktop! In my opinion its going to be the next generation desktop. 3D desktop is available in next version of Windows Vista. Microsoft uses its own DWM to provide 3D desktop in Vista.And its already availabe in Linux. In linux XGL is used to provide the 3D desktop. The above shown video uses XGL in Linux. According to me, I dont see a necessity of 3D desktop today, but i strongly believe that its going to be a desktop of the furure due to its rich user experience!

Beware there is a forward mail around the web which has a phishing link. You might recieve this phishing link saying that your friend wants to share his recent photos with you. This phishing site is hosted in Geocities and If you click this link, you will be taken to Yahoo Photos like phishing site and if you enter your ID and pasword, your Yahoo ID is lost!

What is Phishing?
Phisihng is an fraudulent activity to acquire some sensitive information like passwords, PIN numbers etc. Phishing site is a website which looks like a genuine website and fools the user to enter the sensitive information.

How to prevent Phishing?
1) Dont enter sensitive information in a website unless you are sure that it is a genuine website.
2) Use phishing prevention methods provided by sites like Yahoo.
3) Dont click a link which you recieved from a complete strager.
4) Be aware about the current news about Phishing sites in the web.
5) Use antiphishing softwares.

Worst case Schenario:
If you are a victim of the Phishing and you lost your Yahoo ID and password, follow these steps,

1) Try to change your password ASAP (If your password is not changed after a phishing attack)
2) If your password is changed then try to recover your password by providing the necessary information like DOB in this link.
3) If you dont remember necessary information to recover your password then contact Yahoo to reset your password. Send an email to account-security-help@cc.yahoo-inc.com. And Try calling 866-562-7219
4) If none of the above steps worked then report it to reportabuse@cc.yahoo-inc.com and say "bye bye" to your Yahoo ID and learn from your mistakes. Spread the world so that others will be wary of these kinds of Phishing links.

Why not try Linux?

One fine day I had this question in my mind.... Why not try Linux??? I have been using Windows Since 2000 and I really got bored. So I thought Linux is worth a try.

Being a newbie to linux there were many surprises for me. One of them is the Live CD. Live CD was pretty new to me (May be for you too!). And explored further and found many live distros. Some of them are Damn Small Linux, SLAX, Puppy Linux, Ubuntu etc. Also I was exploring other unix like systems BSD(DragonFlyBSD) and Solaris. Belenix, It is the Live distro based on OpenSolaries created by an indian(In SunMicrosystems, Bangalore). So i couldnt resist myself from trying it out. Out of the all the live distros i liked SLAX due to its good look and feel(Yes, I didnt learn much of the linux yet, but started learning).

What is Live Distro?
If you are wondering what a live distro is then here is what you want. Live Distro is a OS which runs directly from CD! You need not install any of the above OS. Instead put the OS CD and boot directly from the CD!! I always had a hard time installing linux in my windows machine. I always screwed up my windows when i tried to install linux! So if you know the trick please let me know... Still I find it difficult. Surprising thing for me is most of these disros, after booting they can run directly from RAM!!!!

Its not just these Live Distros surprised me. I found that Linux can be run inside Windows using some Virtualisation softwares like VMWare! And also some Linux emulators are available. Some of the popular Linux emulators are Boscs and qemu.

Are you a Linux Newbie??
If you want to learn Linux then I highly recommend one of the above mentioned live distros. Most of them can even boot from a Pen Drive(Lessthan 128 MB)!. So download it and start learning. Do you need learning materials? Dont worry, visit LearnLinux. Linux Documentation will also be useful for your linux adventure. Join me as a Linux newbie, I will keep you posted about my findings! FON is a relatively new term in the blogsphere. FON is nothing but a software program which allows its users to share the WiFi broadband acces. They call it as WiFi revolution(In the official Site). The FON users are called as "Foneros". The Foneros can be of three types, they are Linus, Bill and Alien. Linus is the user who uses WiFi for Free and also shares his/her WiFi for Free with others. The concept is, share your WiFi bandwidth at home and use WiFi all over the world(For Free).Bill, As the name suggests Bill is the user who shares his/her WiFi for some money and pays 50% of what the Alien users pay for using FON. Aliens are the users who pay some modest fee for using FON and they never share their WiFi. FON is still in beta stage and available only for Linus users. As of now FON is covered only in US and Spain, the company said rest of the countries will be covered soon. FON was unvield recently in Jan, 2006 at an Oreilly conference. Martin Varsavsky is the man behind the spain based FON company.

Will it Fly??
As noted above FON is called as the WiFi revolution by the company which promotes it. Before concluding whether it is a revolution or not we have to weigh some obvious things about FON.

First thing is that, it is still in the beta stage. So we are not sure whether it is secure enough to open our WiFi access for everyone. Internet, apart from its benifits, it is also notorious for virususes, hacking etc. So security will be a prime concern in FON.

The second thing about FON is the issue of sharing WiFi bandwidth openly. Will the Broad band(ISP) companies allow their users to share the WiFi openly to everyone? It is an hindrance for FON, but still there are some companies which allows users to share their WiFi through FON. Mind it, only some companies allows that, not many. Will many ISP's follow the suit? Only time gives the answer, lets wait and see. The third factor is you need a router for using FON as a linus user. For now the only compaitable router is Linksys WRT54G/GS/GL. So there are not many options for the router.

And finally FON is dependent on WiFi and ISP providers, since WiFi is not as popular as a wired connection there is a long way to go for FON. WiFi may be popular is some countries, but it is not largely popular in third world countries. By saying not popular i mean WiFi did not reach most of the homes & companies yet.

Pros of FON

Being as a startup does it gets the attention of biggies? Yes it is. In february FON recieved funding of $21.7 Million from Google, Skype and other VC's & it had started becoming the buzzword in net. So thats a great boost for FON. The three cons of FON which are specified above are just difficulties that should be overcome to make FON a success. What i think is FON will be successful in the long run, but it will take more time to fly high!!!

Reinventing My Blog

Getting into blogging was in my mind for quite some time. May be for more than two years... Every time i started blogging i never took it serious and it didnt last long. Now im into serious blogging. So i hope this will be a good begining.

My objective in my blog is to express my self in a better way i can. I wish this blog is useful for the reader in understanding my thoughts and will be glad if this is useful in some way for the reader. I believe Blog SPAMMING is bad(I mean writing nonsense). So i will do some home work before writing anything in the blog and ensure that it sticks to the topic of interest. I may make mistakes in the beginning, but as the time passes by im sure i will improve, aftreall we learnby mistakes. So i would like to recieve many comments, which says where i have to correct my self and where i have done well. This will take me a long way in writing the blog and improving myself. So feel free to comment.

As of now i have categorised my blog in to four topics,

rnd(Thoughts) is a general blog. Where i will talk about anything i cant group in to other topics.
Photo Blog is for sharing some good pictures/photos which is worth sharing to you.
Business Blog is for sharing my business knowledge and thoughts. As you can guess, im not a great businessman yet, but some day im willing to become.
Technology is all about technology! I always love technology, i beieve technology is the one which made us human. Had we not invented new things/technology we would still be apes.

Ajax - The way the web is becoming!

Web is becoming the Ajax way! Many web sites are becoming Ajax sites. Recently I checked out some of the Ajax sites... NetVibes was one among them.This is one of the fewer sites which implemented Ajax long time ago. It was cool! I liked the RSS reader in Netvibes. It was instant and as fast as desktop applications. But i use my.yahoo.com for reading RSS content. So it will take time for me to shift to NetVibes. Rather shifting to NetVibes I expect MyYahoo to go for Ajax.

Google:
Google is the one which popularised the Ajax, by implementing it in Gmail, Google Maps, Google Suggest and many more... Recently Google Finance was released, which is also an implementation of Ajax. Adding fuel for fire, Microsoft recently released Atlas. It is a framework for developing Ajax applications.

WordProcessor:
Recently AjaxWrite was released. I couldnt check out AjaxWrite because it is asking for
FireFox. There are many similar Ajax word processors on the net. Zoho Writer was another one. We can create DOC/PDF/HTML documents using these online word processors. These online proceesors are said to be the alternative for Microsoft Word. But i feel that these cannot replace Microsoft Word Or Openoffice. I feel that these Ajax word processors are similar to WordPad which we use in windows. Recently Google acquired Writely, another online wordprocessor. Writley is there for quite some time than AjaxWrite and Zoho writer.

What Ajax is?
Ajax (Asynchronous JavaScript And XML) is a group of technologies which make the web applications more interactive than before.Eager to know about Ajax??? I wanted to give a shot myself for Blogging. So Iam geared up for blogging.......... Hope everything goes fine.

Visual Studio 2005 is out on Nov 07. Beta version of Visual Studio is available for free download @ Microsft Site. So MCAD certifications for .NET are going to be discontinued. It won't be discontinued before early 2006. Hence Iam planning to take MCAD now and go for an upgrade exam for the new certification.

I took Microsoft's Free e-learning course for ASP.NET. It was good. But eventhen I do not feel its better than book reading. Coz Im more comfortable with reading material in books than in PC. Ofcourse the animations in the Free course were very good.

From Nov 01-Nov 15, Brainbench has opened its Online Tests for Free. So It was useful for me this time. I earned certifications for JavaScript, VisualBasic,Web Development Concepts, DHTML and Web Design Concepts. Since I was good in web application development, I cleared all these exams easily without any preparation. Any how I was unable to clear ASP 3.0 and SQL Server2000 programming with the knowledge which I currently posses. Hope I earn my MCAD certification ASAP.
